Answers:

1. a. The adverb in the sentence is "quietly". To rewrite it in a comparative form, we add "-er" to the end of the adverb: "more quietly". The sentence becomes: "He spoke more quietly to avoid waking up the baby."

b. The correct preposition is "on". The sentence should be: "The cat is sitting on the couch."

c. The correct verb form is "are". The sentence should be: "My brother and I are planning to go hiking in the mountains this weekend."

d. The appropriate modal verb is "should". The sentence should be: "You should try this new restaurant, it has great reviews."

e. The correct verb form is "is going to". The sentence should be: "She is going to finish her project by tomorrow."

f. The mistake is "to hear". It should be "to hearing". This is the exception rule.

[ For those who have done the previous question, The corrected sentence is: "The concert was fantastic. I really enjoyed the performances of the opening act." You can give 1 mark to yourself even if the answer was wrong, as the sentence is theoretically correct! ]

g. The two sentences can be combined using the conjunction "not only ... but also". The sentence should be: "Not only is my sister a talented musician, but also my brother is a talented musician." Not only my sister but also my brother is a talented musician is also a correct answer.

h. The two sentences can be joined using the relative pronoun "who" or "that". The sentence should be: "The man who is lost needs help." or "The man that is lost needs help."

i. The sentence in passive voice would be: "She was awarded the scholarship because of her academic achievements."

j. The reported speech sentence should be: "John said he would be there by 5 pm."

2. a) The word with a different stress pattern is "release". The stress falls on the second syllable, while in the other words, the stress falls on the first syllable.

b) The type of sentence is declarative. It makes a statement or expresses a fact.

c) The word that is not a synonym of "happy" is "melancholy". It means sad or depressed.

d) The word that is not an antonym of "generous" is "kind". It means not having an excessive desire for wealth or possessions.

e) The coordinating conjunction is "and". It is used to join two or more words, phrases, or clauses of equal syntactic importance. Trick to remember coordinating conjunctions is FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
